Far From Heaven (2002) - a visual feast for the colour aficionado as Juilanne Moore, Dennis Quaid, and Dennis Haysbert star in this compelling drama that grapples with issues of race and homosexuality in conservative 1950s Connecticut; set against a spectacular autumn palette.

Gilda (1946) - Glenn Ford stars as a down-and-out gambler who is saved by a notorious casino boss, who then hires him to be his right-hand man, but trouble ensues when he falls in love with his boss' stunning new wife (played by a breathtaking Rita Hayworth in one of her most memorable roles). (b&w)

Head in the Clouds (2004) - a sweeping war drama set in 1930s England/Paris/Spain, the complicated story revolves around a spirited, bisexual photographer (Charlize Theron) and her two lovers, an Irish schoolteacher (Stuart Townsend) and Spanish refugee (Penelope Cruz).

High Society (1956) 

Hollywoodland (2006) - Ben Affleck stars in this lukewarm biopic of the late George Reeves who was most well-known for his role as Superman in the 1950s TV series. Diane Lane and Adrian Brody are also featured.

Howard's End (1992) - Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins star in this Merchant Ivory Production of the classic E.M. Forster novel set in turn-of-the-century Edwardian England.

Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) Alec Guinness assumes multiple characters in this dark comedy about a distant relative of the Duke of D'Ascoyne who plots to inherit the title by murdering the eight other heirs who stand ahead of him in the line of succession. (b+w)

Leave Her to Heaven (1945) - Gene Tierney breaks character type by tackling this role of a jealous, psychotic, and even at times, malicious, wife of promising young writer (Richard Harland).

The Long Hot Summer (1958) - Paul Newman stars in this sizzling drama as a down-and-out farmhand with a bad reputation who lands a job working for a plantation tycoon (Orson Welles) and ultimately, falls in love with his daughter (Joanne Woodward). Angela Lansbury also makes a delightful appearance.

Mrs. Henderson Presents (2005) - Based on the true story of the Windmill Theatre in London, Judi Dench stars as a wealthy, eccentric widow who purchases a theatre and turns it into a somewhat Moulin Rouge-esque venue that featured nude performers during the late 1930s through WWII.

Nancy Drew (2007) - Teenage wannabe detective Nancy Drew (Emma Roberts, Julia Robert's niece) accompanies her father on a business trip to Los Angeles, where she happens upon clues to a murder mystery involving a movie star. Cute retro outfits.

Pollyanna (1960) - an uplifting Disney film starring Hayley Mills as a girl who charms the town's embittered residents with her cheerful demeanor.

Practical Magic (1998) - a romantic comedy featuring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as sister witches and Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing as their eccentric great-aunts. The magnificent Victorian house is the highlight of this film.

Royal Wedding (1951) - Fred Astaire and Jane Powell star as a brother-sister dancing duo who take their act to London in time for the royal wedding of Queen Elizabeth II to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Scoop (2006) - a funny murder mystery starring Scarlett Johansson as a young journalism student, Woody Allen as a bumbling magician and Hugh Jackman as a wealthy, charming aristocrat who might also be a serial killer. Set partially in London and partially at an English country estate.

Sex and the Single Girl (1964) - a raunchy romantic comedy starring Natalie Wood as a young psychologist turned best-selling author of a book encouraging women to "own their sexuality." Tony Curtis is a magazine writer bent on exposing her as a fraud.

Sliding Doors (1998)

Stranger Than Fiction (2006) - a quirky movie starring Will Ferrell whose life is changed forever by the sudden appearance of female voice in his head (Emma Thompson) that seems to narrate his every move as if he was a character in a book.

Summertime (1955) - Katherine Hepburn stars in this beautiful film about a middle-aged spinster school teacher from Ohio who travels to Italy and finds herself experiencing an unexpected romance with a handsome antiques-shop owner (Rossano Brazzi).

Sylvia (2003) - a biopic of writer Sylvia Plath set in the 1950s starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Daniel Craig.
